Dark Souls III provides a great PvP setup also, opening up lots of new ways to spend your time.īut no other games are really quite like them, and I do often find myself comparing everything to my experiences in From Software's weird worlds.

These five games should provide hundreds of hours of gameplay even without dipping into New Game Plus ( Dark Souls II does really interesting things with NG+ by the way). In any case, there's obviously much to do once Bloodborne is a wrap. The DLC is a bit of a mixed bag, but worth playing. I think it could have been truly great if FromSoftware had taken more time crafting an interconnected world, or building out a more unique setting that isn't just a mashup of Souls and Bloodborne. Still, it's great fun and provides plenty of challenge. I think many gamers who started with Bloodborne will prefer it to the earlier games which feel quite plodding by comparison. In some ways it never quite reaches the grandeur of either of those games, but as a "Greatest Hits" style game it hits all the right beats. The variety of Dark Souls with the faster combat of Bloodborne.
Probably still my least favorite of the series, but still very much worth playing.ĭark Souls III is what happens when you take Dark Souls and try to make it more like Bloodborne. I have mixed feelings about this, but anyone who loves Bloodborne will find much to love about Dark Souls III. It's much faster than the first two games in the series, though not quite as fast as Bloodborne. It's also not as well-designed as Bloodborne when it comes to level and world design, but what you lose there you gain in build options, allowing you to play as a rogue or a wizard, a healer or a pyromancer. Now I can honestly say it's a pretty great game.

A series of DLC expansions were released that were outstanding. The Scholar of the First Sin update fixed many (though not all) of its flaws. The devs seemed to only care about the "prepare to die" aspect of the game and missed what made the original so special. The torch system, which emphasized lighting and shadow in the game's pre-release beta, was severely downgraded along with many of the game's other assets just before launch. Invincibility frames were tied to stat progression. When it first came out, the game was widely panned as missing much of what made Dark Souls so great. FromSoftware had a bunch of developers working with Hidetaka Miyazaki on Bloodborne, leaving a newer team without as much direction from Miyazaki to work on the sequel. Track 4) Dark Souls 2: Scholar of the First Sinĭark Souls 2 is in many ways the ugly duckling of the SoulsBorne series. That's where I died. I'd never experienced anything in video games like it before, and it's still remarkable to me how few games approach level design this way. I remember the first time I looked up from the Darkroot Basin and saw the Red Wyvern up on the bridge and realized that hours earlier that's where I'd been. Only Dark Souls and Bloodborne really do this well, weaving levels not just together but over and under one another. There are deep-rooted problems with the game's final act and even the remaster has some framerate issues, but it's still such a powerful experience.Īll the great interwoven level design that makes traversing Bloodborne so compelling is here as well. This remains my favorite of the entire series, though undoubtedly that's largely because it was the first I played and nostalgia is a helluva drug.

Remastered is just nice because you can fire it up on PS4 or Xbox One, or on PC without having to mod it. I say play the Remastered Dark Souls, but the original version is just fine, too.

The Boletarian Palace is one of the most astonishing examples of 3D level design in gaming period. No, it's not as fast and it doesn't share all the same systems, but it has some incredibly satisfying boss fights, and probably the most demanding checkpoint system of any of the "SoulsBorne" series.ĭemon's Souls still has many of my favorite areas from any of these games. In fact, I suspect the two take place in the same world just at very different time periods. And it's rich with the same kind of lore and horror that makes Bloodborne so effective. It's still stuck on PS3, but it holds up both in terms of gameplay and graphics. Start with Demon's Souls, a game with many rough edges that remains one of the most unexpectedly brilliant games ever made.
